Most Australians change their mattress every eight to 10 years, meaning that around 1.25 million mattresses go to landfill each year. When discarded to landfill, steel from spring mattresses can take between 

100 and 200 years to decompose.
Unfortunately, polyurethane-based mattresses including memory foam are even more problematic and can take up to 1,000 years to fully decompose.
